"Vouge" for Second Life

I guess looking good in Second Life has become important enough to merit a "magazine". Interesting rag. More interesting that it shows other ways to monetize Second Life by something more akin to regular advertising.

Artwork in house

I keep forgetting to post this, but did an experiment the other day of putting some of my art up in the house. Came out kinda nice. Need to get moving on putting more of the portfolio up.

Good description of Second Life

It's been interesting to really try to define what Second is (and is not). Found this on a blog (http://www.transhumanism.org/index.php/WTA/more/1229/) and thought it was the best succinct description I had found.

"I definitely see potential in this particular medium, though it is important to acknowledge that Second Life is not the Internet—not Google, not a set of primary sources, and not a scientific journal or database or library. It is not a place where people go (or where people should go) with the primary purpose of obtaining facts. Rather, Second Life is an experimental creative space, a primitive holodeck, an art gallery, and a highly flexible meeting space...Second Life can provide a means for people to interact in real-time, discussing strategy and sharing ideas and memes regardless of physical geographical separation. More work on the clubhouse

Tweaked the build a bit more. Finished closing it and added seating inside.

Not happy with the hole in the roof as way in. even though I think it "makes sense" to land on the roof due to the big comfortable terrace area, I need more graceful way to go down.

Added two-tier seating on the inside. was real happy until I sat and the sitting was sideways. I'm guessing that's because I rotated the seat to do the path cut. Sigh!

But does look like some progress was made. Not unhappy with work today.

Starting to build the BJW clubhouse

So this is a start at the BlueJeanWare clubhouse. After thinking a bit, I decide would be interesting to build it as a sky box. Rez it when we meet, and take it away otherwise.

The idea is a big open, almost transparent box with terrace on the roof and big meeting area inside. Floors and ceilings, solid. Most other things pretty transparent.

Also thinking would be nice to have one of the glass walls "open" to a building auditorium in space to demo builds for group.

Definitely decided to build a platform to stand on while I work. Amazing how many times I fell because I moved the build out from under me. I guess it's the SL equivalent of repeatedly hitting your thumb with a hammer.

Still lots of work to go!

House frame

Started the frame for the first house. Trying to use as few prims as possible. Kinda freaked out that the small lots are limited to 117 prims.

Gallery on first floor, personal are on second, and rooftop balcony.

My first house

Just installed my first house (freebie pre-fab) and got a nice surprise. Form my balcony I can see over the neighbor's house to a lagoon with dolphins. Had not seen that when I first bought the land.

The installation of the house was more "interesting" than I expected. Could not level ground to my satisfaction. and if I moved the house back in the lot the way I wanted, a sliver of the lot intruded into the living room. Finally put a granite slab under the house and not unhappy with the results.

You can visit the house at

Expecting to build my own house so will post progress here at it happens.

My first land!

Ok...I know it was impulse buy...but this is the first plot that

(1) Did not make me feel like I was in Hialeah.

(2) Did not make me like my first born was part of the bargain.

(3) Did not have restrictions which would prevent me from making mixed-used gallery and dwelling.

Was planning to spend L$5,000. This was just over that, L$5,504. But I like it. I am officially landowner!

Miami Herald, Second Life Opportunity

Saw this interesting story in the Herald about Second Life.

http://www.miamiherald.com/business/national/story/311040.html

Couple of statements really caught my eye...
"Though most people today give quizzical looks when they hear the term avatar, by the end of 2011, 80 percent of active Internet users and major companies are expected to have some virtual-world-type presence, according to Gartner Inc., a Stamford, Conn.-based research company."

and...
"At this point the virtual world space ''feels very immature
like the Internet once did. It also feels very ripe with possibility,'' says Amy
Vickers, global director for enterprise solutions with Avenue A Razorfish, a
Manhattan-based interactive marketing and technology services agency."

Both of these statements kind of indicate opportunity, but I think it is for a relatively short period of time (2-3 years). So get started boning up on the stuff!

New blog for tidbits on Second Life

So....

I thought it would be good to start jotting down some of the items I come across as I review and learn Second Life. This blog seemed like a good way to start simply.

Stay tuned!
